Biafra Government, Led by Simon Ekpa, Issues Ultimatum to Nigerian Government Over Nnamdi Kanu's Detention

The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra government has issued a new ultimatum to the Nigerian government, demanding the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other individuals from the South-East who are currently detained across the country.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since his controversial extradition from Kenya, a situation that has escalated tensions in the South-East. Earlier this week, the region experienced a two-day total lockdown due to a sit-at-home order spread via a viral video, though both Simon Ekpa and the IPOB leadership disclaimed the directive.

In a statement posted on his X account (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ekpa called for the release of all detained individuals from the South-East. He also urged judges from the region who are serving in other parts of Nigeria to return home.

Ekpa revealed that the ultimatum, which is set to expire on October 27, 2024, followed an emergency meeting held that day. He accused the Nigerian judicial system of contributing to insecurity in the South-East by enabling the rise of governors who do not serve the people's interests.

Furthermore, Ekpa warned that if his demands are not met, his group would enforce a lockdown on all federal courts in the South-East starting from October 29, 2024.

"The Biafra Government, in an emergency cabinet meeting today, 24.10.2024, voted and approved a resolution to demand the Nigerian government to return every Biafran being detained outside Biafraland within 72 hours," Ekpa stated. "The 72 hours will expire on Sunday, 27.10.2024."

He threatened that failure to meet these demands would lead to a shutdown of federal institutions in the region, including courts.
