President Joe Biden is under fire after seemingly labeling supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as "garbage" during a video call with VotoLatino on Tuesday. The remarks arose in response to comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who, while performing at a Trump rally in New York, referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
In his remarks, Biden stated, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” while condemning Trump’s “demonization of Latinos” as “unconscionable and un-American.” The White House later sought to clarify Biden's statement, asserting that his comment was directed at Trump's rhetoric rather than his supporters. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized that Biden was calling out the "hateful rhetoric" displayed at the Madison Square Garden rally.
In response, Trump’s campaign quickly condemned Biden’s comments. Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump characterized Biden's words as “terrible,” likening them to Hillary Clinton's infamous 2016 remark about Trump supporters being “deplorables.” Trump remarked, “Garbage, I think, is worse, right?”
J.D. Vance, Trump's running mate, also weighed in, labeling Biden's comments as “disgusting” and accusing the president and Vice President Kamala Harris of attacking a significant portion of the American populace.
This incident has heightened tensions in the lead-up to the election, with just one week remaining before Election Day, as Biden and Harris face a tight race against Trump.
