The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into the troubling incident at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya, where Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their technical team were detained for over 14 hours.
In a statement released on Monday, October 14, CAF’s communications department expressed its concern and promised to hold those responsible accountable. The case has been referred to CAF’s disciplinary board for further action.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with both Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in unacceptable conditions at an airport where they were reportedly directed to land by Libyan officials,” the statement said.
CAF emphasized that the disciplinary board will conduct a full investigation to ensure that any violations of CAF statutes and regulations are addressed appropriately.
The incident occurred as the Super Eagles were in Libya for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. They were detained for several hours before finally being granted clearance to leave the country. The team returned to Nigeria late on the same day.
CAF's response highlights its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all teams participating in international football events.
