California's 'Under-Stairs Cubby' Rental Sparks Attention on US Housing Crisis

A unique listing in California is drawing comparisons to Harry Potter’s living quarters and highlighting the severe housing challenges many Americans face. A recent Craigslist ad in San Jose offers a 3ft by 10ft cubby space under the stairs of a one-bedroom apartment for $250 a month.

Described as fitting “a cot perfectly,” this compact space calls to mind the fictional childhood home of Harry Potter. The listing offers essential utilities, air conditioning, heating, and gated parking but warns of drawbacks such as “chores, cleaning,” and the area being “kind of in the ghetto.” The landlord specifies they’re looking for a “nerdy gamer,” without pets, addictions, or a criminal record.

The small cubby’s appearance in the rental market is a stark reflection of California’s—and the country’s—housing crisis. According to a 2024 Harvard study, by 2022, half of US renters were spending over 30% of their income on rent and utilities, with half of those paying over 50%. San Jose renters face even steeper costs, averaging $3,132 monthly—53% above the national average, per Zillow data. Although unconventional, the under-stairs space is notably affordable for the area.

However, the rental ad’s stipulations have raised some eyebrows, as California law prohibits landlords from denying housing to individuals solely based on their criminal record. As the US housing market remains tight, listings like this cubby rental underscore the need for accessible, affordable housing solutions across the country.
