Calls for Nnamdi Kanu's Release Resonate at Iwuanyanwu Tribute Service

Demands for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), intensified on Saturday during the service of songs held in honor of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS custody despite continued calls from Igbo leaders advocating for a political solution. Speakers at the tribute ceremony highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s desire for Kanu’s freedom, describing it as one of his final wishes. Many called upon President Bola Tinubu to honor Iwuanyanwu’s legacy by facilitating Kanu’s release and immortalizing the late Ohanaeze leader.

Lolo Kate Ezeofor, President-General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, urged President Tinubu to consider these requests, emphasizing the importance of Iwuanyanwu’s legacy as a "detribalized Nigerian."

During the laying-in-state at the former Eastern Nigeria Government Lodge in Enugu, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described Iwuanyanwu as a "remarkable bridge builder" and a man of impressive achievements across media, sports, engineering, and aviation. Former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu, alongside Chief Garry Igariwey, former Ohanaeze President-General, praised Iwuanyanwu's unwavering dedication to Igboland and his stature as a unifying force.

Prof. Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first President, also urged the federal government to immortalize Iwuanyanwu as a symbol of unity and integrity for future generations.
