A tragic shooting occurred during homecoming weekend at Albany State University in Georgia, resulting in one death and five others being wounded on Saturday night, according to university officials.
Interim President Lawrence M. Drake II confirmed that the incident took place on the school's east campus. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the investigation. Drake emphasized the university’s commitment to the safety of students, faculty, and staff, stating, "The safety and security of our ASU community is always our top priority."
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler identified the victim as 19-year-old De-Morion Tayshawn Daniels from Atlanta, who passed away at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Earlier that day in Mississippi, a separate shooting claimed the lives of three people and injured eight others during a celebration following a high school football team's homecoming victory near Lexington. Authorities reported that at least two individuals opened fire at the outdoor gathering.
These incidents add to the grim tally of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, with over 420 such events reported by Sunday morning. Calls for stricter federal gun control measures have grown in response to the rising number of shootings, but significant legislative action has remained elusive.
