Donald Trump made a bold return to Butler, Pennsylvania, for a rally on Saturday, joking about a failed assassination attempt from July. The former president, who was grazed by a bullet during the incident, took the stage behind bulletproof glass, opening his speech with a humorous line: "As I was saying."
The failed attempt occurred 12 weeks earlier, when a shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire on Trump from a nearby rooftop. A bullet grazed Trump's ear, but he survived the incident, which he credited to his quick reflexes and a border-crossing chart he had nearby at the time.
Despite the harrowing experience, Trump made light of the event, telling his supporters that the shooter did not succeed in silencing him or stopping the MAGA movement. The crowd responded with enthusiasm, waving signs that read "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!"—a nod to Trump's resilience and determination to continue his campaign.
Joining Trump at the rally were billionaire Elon Musk, who has publicly endorsed the former president, and Trump's running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. The event marked a significant moment in Trump's campaign, with heightened security ensuring his safety as he finished the speech that was interrupted in July.
While Trump was lucky to escape with only a minor injury, the shooting tragically claimed the life of Corey Comperatore, a former volunteer fire chief. Trump paid tribute to Comperatore during the rally, acknowledging his sacrifice. Comperatore’s widow, Helen, along with other family members, were in attendance, honoring his memory.
This time, with stronger security measures in place, Trump vowed to finish what he started, continuing to energize his supporters with his characteristic defiance.
