Health officials in Dane County, Wisconsin, are investigating a troubling incident involving THC-laced pizza from Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton, which is located about 20 miles southeast of Madison. The contaminated pizzas were reportedly served from Monday through Thursday, leading to multiple reports of illness among customers.
Paramedics notified health officials on Thursday after transporting five individuals who became sick after dining at the establishment. Since then, officials have received numerous additional reports of people experiencing symptoms after consuming the pizza, and they are still compiling data on the total number of affected individuals.
According to the authorities, the incident occurred when a restaurant cook, running low on oil, mistakenly took a jug of oil containing Delta-9 THC from a shared commercial kitchen in the same building. While marijuana is illegal in Wisconsin, THC derived from hemp products is legal. Health officials noted that the oil in question can be used in various food items, including cookies and sauces.
Symptoms associated with THC consumption can include dizziness, elevated blood pressure, vomiting, anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations.
Cale Ryan, co-owner of Famous Yeti’s Pizza, explained that the cook unintentionally grabbed the wrong oil, contaminating one batch of dough that could produce up to 60 pizzas. Ryan mentioned that he has heard from about 20 customers who reported feeling the effects.
“They get really stoned,” Ryan remarked. “They get intoxicated from the THC, so I think it’s more alarming than anything to feel that way. It’s basically eating an edible without knowing.” Health officials continue to investigate the situation to ensure the safety of the community.
