Taiwo Obasanjo, the estranged wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has been evicted from her Abuja residence due to several years of unpaid rent. The landlord of the property, located at 30 Jessie Jackson Street in the upscale Asokoro district, had previously issued a 30-day ultimatum for her to either pay the overdue rent or vacate the premises. Taiwo, however, failed to comply with the notice.
The eviction took place on Friday, October 18, 2024, after the grace period expired. According to sources, Taiwo's belongings were thrown out of the house, and as of the time of reporting, her properties remained outside the building. "She has been struggling to pay the rent for her Asokoro apartment, and the eviction was a public embarrassment," a source revealed.
This development follows a series of public disputes between Taiwo and her former husband, Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria's head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as president from 1999 to 2007. Their strained relationship resurfaced in 2023 when Taiwo publicly criticized the former president, calling him a "wicked husband" after he disowned her following a controversial incident in Iseyin, Oyo State.
During that time, Obasanjo faced backlash for scolding traditional rulers for not standing to greet him at a project inauguration. In response, Taiwo sought forgiveness on his behalf, but Obasanjo dismissed her actions, claiming she was not his wife and questioned her mental health, despite the fact that they share two children.
In retaliation, Taiwo launched a series of accusations against Obasanjo, accusing him of arrogance and mistreatment during their marriage. She also questioned the legitimacy of his current marital status, claiming that many of his marriages were not officially conducted.
The ongoing public feud between the estranged couple continues to capture attention, with Taiwo maintaining that her former husband’s behavior during their marriage had driven her to leave him.
