Fayose Urges Atiku to Step Back from Electoral Politics

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has advised former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to refrain from contesting elections in Nigeria.

Atiku, who has run for the presidency multiple times—specifically in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023—has faced significant challenges in these bids, including three losses during primaries. Despite his past experiences, there are indications that the 77-year-old politician may be considering another attempt for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 elections. Earlier this year, in an interview with Voice of America Hausa, Atiku expressed hopefulness about his future political endeavors, stating, “God willing,” when asked if he would run again.

While discussing the current situation within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose expressed his belief that Atiku should step aside. He remarked, “At this stage, with all due respect to him, he would rather want to stay away from the politics of contesting elections again.”

Fayose pointed out that by the time President Bola Tinubu concludes his tenure, Atiku will be around 80 or 81 years old, questioning the appeal of returning to the electoral fray at that age. He further suggested, “We should leave the stage when the ovation is loudest,” adding that Nigerians are increasingly seeking younger leaders.

Fayose's comments highlight a growing sentiment among some political observers and constituents, advocating for a generational shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
