Super Eagles Stranded in Libya Ahead of AFCON Qualifier

The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, find themselves stranded in Libya as they prepare for the second leg of their AFCON 2025 Qualifier against the home side. This match comes after Nigeria's recent 1-0 victory over Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on October 11.

The team departed from Nigeria on Sunday, October 13, for the match scheduled to take place in Benina. However, complications arose when their chartered flight was diverted to Al Abraq, a city located over two hours from Benghazi, the intended destination.

Promise Efoghe, the media officer for the Super Eagles, reported that the Libyan authorities failed to arrange transportation to take the team to Benghazi. This oversight has forced the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make alternative travel plans amidst growing frustrations from their Libyan hosts.

As a result, the Super Eagles players and officials will now have to travel by road to their match location. Footage shared by the NFF on Sunday night depicted Nigerian players and officials attempting to address the issue at a Libyan airport, where they encountered locked gates that prevented their entry.

There are suspicions that these obstacles imposed by Libyan authorities may be aimed at frustrating the Super Eagles and disrupting their preparations ahead of the crucial match.
