Federal Government Clarifies UK Stance on Sunday Igboho's Petition for Yoruba Nation

On Tuesday, October 15, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced that the United Kingdom government did not endorse the petition submitted by Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, also known as “Sunday Igboho,” regarding the creation of a Yoruba Nation.

In a statement, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, characterized recent media reports about the petition as “highly misleading.”

“Following media reports concerning the petition submitted at No. 10 Downing Street by Mr. Sunday Adeyemo, the British High Commissioner in Abuja was invited to provide clarity on the matter,” Abu-Obe explained.

During the meeting, the High Commissioner expressed concern that the issue had been exaggerated, indicating that the media coverage was inaccurate. He confirmed awareness of the letter's delivery but emphasized that it was a standard practice to accept letters and petitions at No. 10.

“The petition was not endorsed by any UK government agency or the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee,” he added. “The UK government generally refrains from involving itself in petitions related to the sovereign affairs of other countries.”
