A central Florida jury has found Sarah Boone guilty of second-degree murder, concluding her four-year-long case regarding the death of her boyfriend, Jorge Torres. Boone, who had maintained her innocence, received the verdict on Friday evening following the jury’s 90-minute deliberation.
Boone initially told Orange County detectives that on 23 February 2020, she and Torres were drinking at their Winter Park home and, during a game of hide-and-seek, thought it would be amusing for Torres to get inside a suitcase. She claimed that she fell asleep, assuming Torres could exit the suitcase himself. However, when she woke up the next day and remembered where he was, she discovered him unresponsive inside, according to the arrest report.
The case took a turn when detectives uncovered mobile phone videos showing Torres trapped in the suitcase, calling out to Boone and saying he couldn’t breathe. In response, Boone is heard saying, “Yeah, that’s what you do when you choke me” and “Oh, that’s what I feel like when you cheat on me,” per the report.
Boone testified in her defense, arguing that past violent incidents with Torres had led her to feel threatened, prompting her actions as self-defense. However, an autopsy indicated multiple injuries on Torres, including scratches, blunt-force trauma to his head and shoulders, and a cut near his lip.
Throughout her legal proceedings, Boone experienced multiple attorney changes, extending the timeline for her trial, which ultimately lasted 10 days. She is set for sentencing on 2 December.
