Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party's gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State in the recent elections, has expressed deep concern regarding the economic implications of ships departing Nigeria without cargo. Taking to Instagram, he shared his observations on the alarming trend, emphasizing the impact on the nation’s economy and employment rates.
In his post, Rhodes-Vivour noted, “For years, I have sat at this table and looked at ships come in and leave the ports. While the number of ships in our harbor has greatly reduced, watching a ship leave a country populated by 200 million people, EMPTY is extremely painful.” He highlighted that this phenomenon not only escalates shipping costs to Nigeria but also correlates with rising unemployment and the devaluation of the Nigerian currency.
He urged for a concerted effort to enhance productivity both locally and nationally, stating, “With our population, ships should not be leaving empty.” Rhodes-Vivour further stressed the need for a shift from consumption to production, declaring, “Consumption to production is not a catchphrase; it is our only way out.”
His remarks bring attention to the broader economic challenges facing Nigeria, as he calls for actionable solutions to improve the country’s productivity and economic resilience.
