Governor Fubara Condemns Political Violence and Vows Justice Amidst Rising Tensions in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has issued a strong warning against political thuggery and violence following recent unrest in the state. His statement comes after several local government secretariats were set on fire by political thugs in Ikwerre, Emohua, and Eleme Local Government Areas.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, October 8, Governor Fubara pledged to work closely with the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to apprehend those behind the attacks.

The newly sworn-in commissioners include Hon. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, PhD; Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi; Barrister Otamiri John Ngubo; and Hon. Barrister Benibo Anabraba, who have now joined the Rivers State Executive Council.

Governor Fubara referenced his earlier warning, given during the inauguration of newly elected local government chairmen on October 6, 2024. At that event, he had expressed concerns about potential unrest from those unhappy with the election results. His concerns materialized shortly after, as thugs carried out the attacks on council offices.

"I anticipated this unrest. Some individuals dissatisfied with the election results are determined to disrupt the peace in Rivers State," Fubara said, adding that the culprits would face justice. He called on residents to stay calm as investigations continue.

While acknowledging the frustrations among Rivers residents, the governor commended their restraint during the violence and reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace. He urged against any retaliatory actions, emphasizing that violence would only worsen the state's situation.

"We must handle the current situation with care, like carrying a basket of fragile eggs," he said, encouraging citizens to prioritize peace above all.

Governor Fubara also addressed the ongoing issue of oil theft, noting its damaging effects on the state and the national economy. He stressed the importance of combating pipeline vandalism and increasing oil production to improve revenue for necessary development projects.

"Our focus must remain on stopping oil theft and ensuring pipeline security. Only then can we boost revenues and fund critical projects for Rivers State," he added.

Despite the political unrest, the governor reassured residents that his administration is progressing steadily with key projects. He promised that significant developments would be unveiled by the end of October 2024.

Congratulating the newly appointed commissioners, Governor Fubara urged them to remain committed, loyal, and hardworking in their roles to help drive the state’s growth and development.
