The Nigerian House of Representatives has advanced a bill for second reading, aimed at involving the Armed Forces in food production as a strategy to bolster food security and promote economic diversification. Sponsored by Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), the proposed legislation seeks to establish Armed Forces Farms and Ranches as part of an initiative to enhance food security and stimulate the agricultural sector.
Introducing the bill, Benson explained that the initiative would leverage the resources and organizational strength of the Nigerian Armed Forces to boost agricultural production. This move is aligned with the government’s efforts to reduce dependency on oil revenue by supporting agriculture as a sustainable economic alternative. According to Benson, the proposed Defence Farms and Ranches scheme builds on previous government initiatives that involved the military in food production, which has historically been a part of their operations for military sustenance.
The bill outlines that land required for these agricultural activities would be sourced from the Armed Forces' own land holdings spread across Nigeria. This approach would allow the military to cultivate a variety of crops adapted to diverse regional climates, optimizing land use and supporting biodiversity. The scheme also proposes collaborative efforts with other governmental ministries and agencies to implement integrated farming systems that blend crop cultivation with livestock and fish farming.
Benson highlighted that the initiative could significantly contribute to increased agricultural output, helping to stabilize food prices and reduce reliance on imports. He added that the scheme would create job opportunities for both military personnel and civilians, equipping them with valuable agricultural skills beneficial for future economic activities.
By boosting agricultural production, the plan aims to strengthen local economies, foster economic growth, and address security challenges linked to food scarcity. Benson emphasized the connection between food insecurity and social instability, noting that military involvement in agriculture could help curb youth unrest and criminal activities, making it a proactive approach to tackling insecurity across the nation.
