The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced revised rates for national driver’s licences and vehicle number plates, set to take effect from November 1, 2024. These new rates are part of an initiative to enhance the quality and security of these documents, aligning them with international standards.
Under the updated pricing, a three-year motor vehicle driver’s licence will now cost N15,000, while a five-year licence will be priced at N21,000. For motorcycle and tricycle drivers, the cost of a three-year licence will rise to N7,000, and a five-year licence will be N11,000.
In addition to driver’s licences, the cost of vehicle number plates has also been adjusted. Standard private and commercial vehicle plates will now cost N30,000, while fancy number plates will be priced at N400,000. Motorcycle plates will be available for N12,000, and dealer vehicle number plates will cost N100,000.
Government-issued plates have also seen price adjustments. Fancy government vehicle plates will now cost N120,000, and standard government plates will be priced at N80,000. Motorcycle number plates for government vehicles will cost N50,000 for fancy options and N20,000 for standard ones.
According to the JTB, these adjustments are designed to introduce improved security features, making it easier to identify both drivers and vehicles throughout the country.
Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, stressed the need for public awareness of the new rates. In a circular obtained by BusinessDay, he mentioned, "The secretariat has requested that the FRSC [Federal Road Safety Corps] notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitisation plans. We believe that a robust engagement will ensure a seamless implementation of the revised rates."
The FRSC will lead the public sensitisation campaign in the lead-up to the November 2024 implementation date.
