Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League table after defeating Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday evening, October 20. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones secured the victory, marking Liverpool’s 10th win in 11 matches since Dutch manager Arne Slot took charge of the team.
Salah opened the scoring with a penalty, and Jones added the decisive goal, keeping Liverpool a point ahead of Manchester City and four points clear of Arsenal, who they will face at the Emirates next weekend.
Liverpool's only loss under Slot came against Nottingham Forest before the international break in September.
Slot gave Jones just his second league start of the season, and the England international delivered, both winning Liverpool’s penalty and scoring the crucial second goal.
The match saw Tosin Adarabioyo bring down Diogo Jota after just six minutes, though Chelsea was fortunate to avoid a red card. Despite this, Chelsea regained composure, controlling possession and pressing Liverpool back.
However, the Reds capitalized on a counter-attack when Salah set up Jones, who was fouled by Levi Colwill, leading to Salah converting the penalty—his 10th goal against his former club. Cody Gakpo thought he had added another, but the goal was ruled offside.
Chelsea equalized early in the second half through Nicolas Jackson, who finished Moises Caicedo’s through ball for his fifth Premier League goal in eight games. But Liverpool responded quickly, with Jones perfectly timing his run to finish Salah’s cross, sealing the win.
Despite Chelsea’s efforts to find another goal, they struggled to create clear opportunities, leaving Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
