Mental Health Professionals Warn Against Trump’s Candidacy in Full-Page Ad

An anti-Trump political group has launched a full-page ad in the New York Times, signed by over 200 mental health professionals, declaring Donald Trump “grossly unfit for leadership.” The advertisement, published less than two weeks before the presidential election, alleges that Trump displays symptoms of a “severe, untreatable personality disorder” known as malignant narcissism, labeling him an “existential threat to democracy” in the United States.

The ad was funded by Anti-Psychopath Pac, a political action committee focused on questioning Trump’s mental fitness for office. In their letter, the group references the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), suggesting that Trump exhibits behavioral criteria consistent with antisocial personality disorder. They point to a history of “failure to conform to social norms and laws,” “repeated lying,” and “reckless disregard for the safety of others” as evidence of his condition.

Despite ethical concerns surrounding mental health diagnoses made without personal assessments—known as the Goldwater Rule—the signatories argue that years of observing Trump’s behavior warrant their conclusions. They contend that Trump’s alleged mental disorder makes him “deceitful, destructive, deluded, and dangerous.”

The letter also raises concerns about Trump’s cognitive abilities, recommending he undergo a comprehensive neurological evaluation. Among the signatories are a variety of professionals, including a lecturer from Cornell University, a psychotherapist from Maryland, and other mental health practitioners.

Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has previously described Trump as “increasingly unstable and unhinged,” further emphasizing the Democrats' narrative that highlights concerns over his fitness for office. During a recent debate, she invited voters to attend one of Trump's rallies to witness his incoherent speaking style and tendency to discuss fictional characters, such as Hannibal Lecter.

This initiative follows a separate full-page advertisement in the New York Times, featuring over 200 survivors of sexual assault and gender violence. One signatory alleged that Trump had groped her in the past, underscoring the civil case in which Trump was found liable for sexual abuse against writer E. Jean Carroll.

As the election approaches, scrutiny of Trump's mental fitness continues to escalate, especially as both he and his opponent, Joe Biden, would be the oldest president ever elected if they win.
