Mother and Two Children Believed to Have Jumped Intentionally into Niagara Falls

Authorities have reported a tragic incident involving a mother from upstate New York, who allegedly jumped into Niagara Falls with her two young children. New York State Police confirmed that 33-year-old Chaianti Means, her 9-year-old son Roman Rossman, and 5-month-old daughter Mecca Means went over the falls near Luna Island on Monday, October 28, around 9 p.m.

Police were alerted to the scene between Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls by the New York State Park Police and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The incident reportedly occurred after the family passed over a safety guardrail on Luna Island, located north of Goat Island.

During a statement on Wednesday, New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan verified that Means was the mother of the two children. He noted that the family has been cooperative as the investigation continues, with authorities believing the fall was "intentional in nature." However, the details surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

A coordinated search-and-rescue operation has been ongoing, with teams using park police drones, marine patrol, and underwater recovery units, yet recovery efforts remained unsuccessful as of Wednesday evening. Officials from the Niagara Falls Police Department and Niagara Charter Schools are also assisting with the investigation, while authorities have assured the public there is no ongoing safety threat.
