In a startling incident at Chipinge District Hospital in Zimbabwe, a new mother, Cynthia Masocha, gave birth to a baby boy, only to discover the next morning that her child had been switched with a baby girl. The incident, which has left the local community in shock, is now under investigation by both the police and hospital authorities.
Masocha delivered her baby boy on September 21, 2024, assisted by midwife Blessing Mutimbu. After the birth, Mutimbu held up the baby to confirm its sex, which Masocha verified as male. Following this, Masocha breastfed her son and rested. However, to her astonishment, when she checked the nappies the following morning, she found the baby was a girl.
"I couldn’t believe my eyes when I checked the nappies. I was sure I had given birth to a boy, and the hospital records confirmed it," Masocha reportedly told authorities, expressing her shock and confusion.
Masocha was one of three women who had given birth that day, and she was the only one to deliver a male child. Hospital records clearly indicate that she had given birth to a baby boy, deepening the mystery surrounding the sudden switch.
Authorities at the hospital and the police have initiated DNA testing to determine the baby's identity and investigate how the mix-up occurred. Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the acting spokesperson for the Manicaland provincial police, confirmed the incident, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
"On the evening of September 21, Ms. Masocha gave birth to a baby boy. The sex was confirmed, and hospital records listed the child as male. However, the following morning, Ms. Masocha found the baby in her care was a girl," Chinyoka said in a statement.
While no suspects have been named yet, detectives are working to uncover how the switch occurred. DNA tests are being carried out to verify the child’s identity and bring clarity to this unusual case.
