Nigeria experienced significant power disruptions on Monday as the national grid suffered another collapse. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the outage in a statement released by spokesperson Emeka Ezeh.
The collapse occurred at 6:48 PM, leading to a complete loss of power supply across the EEDC network, which serves customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. Ezeh stated, “This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the EEDC network. We are on standby awaiting detailed information about the collapse and the restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo.”
Eko Distribution Company also reported the grid collapse, urging customers to remain patient as they work with partners to restore power. “We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us,” the company stated.
Reports indicated that power supply was interrupted around 6:50 PM. This incident follows a series of power issues in Nigeria, including a partial grid failure in August and a previous collapse in July. Over the past 14 years, data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria reveals that the national grid has collapsed approximately 227 times.
The latest outage comes amid rising electricity tariffs, which increased by 240 percent in April, exacerbating the challenges faced by Nigerians regarding power supply and overall living conditions.
