Nigerians on social media platform X are coming to the defense of Libyan authorities after the Super Eagles, Nigeria's national football team, were poorly treated upon their arrival in Libya. The team, which traveled to the North African country on Sunday, October 13, was supposed to land in Benghazi but their flight was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located two hours away from their intended destination.
The Super Eagles and their entourage were held in the airport's arrival hall for several hours and were not allowed to leave, with reports emerging that the team had been stranded for over 13 hours without food. Frustrated Super Eagles players took to X to voice their complaints about the situation.
However, a segment of Nigerians on X defended the actions of Libyan authorities, noting that the Libyan national football team had reportedly experienced similar treatment during a visit to Nigeria. Some argued that Libya’s response was a form of retaliation, with some Libyan users referring to it as a "tit-for-tat" situation.
While some Nigerians expressed outrage over the poor treatment of their national team, others acknowledged the possibility that the incident stemmed from previous actions between both countries’ teams, sparking mixed reactions across the platform.
The situation has garnered significant attention online as both Nigerians and Libyans exchange views, highlighting tensions between the two footballing nations.
