President Biden and President Tinubu Discuss Law Enforcement and UN Security Council Representation for Africa

On October 9, U.S. President Joe Biden and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu held a phone conversation, discussing issues from law enforcement cooperation to the potential inclusion of an African seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, shared details of the call, which took place around 4 p.m. Nigerian time and lasted about 30 minutes. During the conversation, the leaders touched on law enforcement collaboration, including recent developments involving Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance.

Tuggar explained, "The call covered the partnership between the two nations on law enforcement issues, including the release of a key figure from the cryptocurrency trading company, as you may be aware."

President Tinubu expressed his appreciation for the strong security partnership between the U.S. and Africa. According to Tuggar, Biden emphasized the importance of U.S.-Africa relations, saying, “The future of the world resides in Africa, making this partnership vital.”

Additionally, Biden reaffirmed U.S. support for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council. Tuggar noted Biden’s comments that “there’s no reason why one of those seats shouldn’t belong to Nigeria,” highlighting the U.S. leader's support for Nigeria’s role in global governance.

This dialogue underscores the strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United States on key international issues, including security and Africa’s influence within the UN.
