Ademola Lookman, the Atalanta and Super Eagles striker, has expressed his excitement and pride at being the only African footballer nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, set to take place on Monday, October 28, in Paris. At 27, Lookman stands as the continent's sole representative among the world’s elite players in the prestigious ceremony.
Lookman, who made headlines by scoring a historic hat-trick during Atalanta’s Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen—the first hat-trick in a European final since 1975—remarked on the importance of his nomination. “It’s special being on the list and even more special being the only African,” Lookman shared with BBC Sport Africa. “This year, we achieved great things with both club and country. Being recognised as a contender is a great honor.”
Reflecting on his pivotal hat-trick in Atalanta's first-ever Europa League triumph, Lookman described the match as unforgettable. “That night was special,” he recalled. “Leverkusen were having a fantastic season, and to win in that fashion was beyond incredible. Those are the moments you dream of.” He also spoke about his growth as a player and his openness to continuous improvement: “Stepping out of my comfort zone isn’t always easy, but I’m committed to learning and becoming better—not just as a player, but as a person.”
Lookman’s stellar season has also made him a leading contender for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he faces strong competition, including fellow Nigerian and teammate William Troost-Ekong.
