The United Kingdom's aviation authorities have expressed their willingness to engage in discussions regarding the allocation of landing slots for Nigerian carrier Air Peace at London's Heathrow Airport. This follows a formal request from Nigeria's Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, sent in early September, seeking fairer access to Heathrow for Nigeria's flag carrier.
In response to Keyamo’s diplomatic letter, UK Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, indicated that her department is open to further dialogue on the matter. Haigh also mentioned that the issue would be addressed at the upcoming International Civil Aviation Negotiations event in October 2024.
This development comes amid growing tensions between the two countries, with Nigeria threatening to restrict UK carriers from accessing landing slots at Lagos and Abuja airports if Air Peace continues to be denied slots at Heathrow. The discussions aim to resolve these tensions and secure fairer access for Air Peace to international airspace.
