VIDEO: Femi Kuti Criticizes Ethnic Tribalism, Names Notable Yoruba Adversaries

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has voiced his concerns about tribalism within his ethnic group, the Yoruba, during the 2024 Felaberation Festival in Lagos. He identified former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the late business mogul MKO Abiola as significant adversaries of the Kuti family.

In his remarks, Kuti emphasized that his family does not engage in tribalism, crediting their upbringing to the influence of prominent pan-Africanists. "Brothers and sisters, something very important is going on in our lives; ethnic problems. You call it tribalism. Please, do not bring the Anikulapos into your stupidity," he stated.

Kuti further elaborated on his family's values, saying, “We grew up with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey, Patrice Lumumba, Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Pan-Africanism was the order of the day. So, I didn’t grow up being sentimental. I’ve met good and bad people from all backgrounds.”

He continued, “One of our greatest enemies, as you know, are Yoruba people; Obasanjo or Abiola. We are not tribalistic in our family.” His comments reflect a broader message against ethnic division and a call for unity among Africans.
