In a legal dispute between music mogul Dr. Dre and his former therapist, Dr. Charles Sophy, a Los Angeles judge has ruled in favor of Dre, dismissing the temporary restraining order that had been granted to Sophy.
Dr. Sophy, a prominent child therapist, had sought a permanent restraining order against Dre, claiming he received "menacing" text messages from the rapper and producer. Sophy testified that Dre’s messages, which included insults such as “You’re a piece of s***,” left him fearing for his safety. He suggested that Dre’s anger stemmed from his involvement in marriage counseling for Dre and his ex-wife Nicole during their high-profile divorce. Sophy contended that Dre blamed him for his strained relationship with his children, an accusation that Sophy denied.
Dre appeared at the hearing via Zoom, while Sophy was present in court. Although Dre admitted to sending the messages, he maintained that they were expressions of frustration and not credible threats of violence. In his defense, Dre argued that his communications did not meet the legal standard for threatening behavior.
After considering both sides, the judge ultimately sided with Dre, concluding that while the messages were heated, they did not constitute threats of violence. As a result, the restraining order, which had previously required Dre to stay at least 100 yards away from Sophy, was dismissed. The ruling also allows Dre the possibility of resuming contact with Sophy if he chooses.
During the hearing, Sophy also addressed accusations that Dre had labeled him “racist.” Sophy, who has worked with children from diverse backgrounds for over 20 years, defended himself by highlighting his long-standing commitment to inclusivity through his professional work.
