Following Republican candidate Donald Trump’s narrow path to victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, tech mogul Elon Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a nostalgic and playful post. The image, which showed Musk holding a sink in front of the White House’s Oval Office, was an edited version of a famous throwback photo from 2022. This original image featured Musk entering Twitter headquarters with a literal sink after acquiring the social media platform for $44 billion.
The caption accompanying Musk’s post read, “Let that sink in!” referencing the original tweet from October 26, 2022, when Musk shared the moment of his Twitter takeover.
Musk’s tweet has sparked widespread speculation about the possibility of him taking on a role in Trump’s administration if the Republican candidate secures a second term in office. In past statements, Trump expressed interest in appointing Musk as his “secretary of cost-cutting,” fueling rumors of a high-profile position for the billionaire.
As media outlets projected Trump’s increasing momentum towards the 270 electoral votes needed to win, Musk enthusiastically shared his thoughts on the outcome. He posted "Game, set and match," a phrase commonly used in tennis to declare victory, signaling his optimism about the results. Musk also shared a photo from an election night party where he was seen conversing with Trump, followed by additional posts celebrating the potential for change, including, “America is a nation of builders” and “Soon, you will be free to build.”
Musk’s support for Trump has been vocal and financially significant, with reports indicating that he has donated over $118 million to the Trump campaign since his endorsement in July 2024.
