Basketball icon Michael Jordan has publicly denied claims that he endorsed Donald Trump for the 2024 U.S. presidential election after a viral post on social media spread the false information.
On Sunday, November 3, a post on X alleged that the six-time NBA champion, now 61, had “become the latest celebrity to endorse Donald Trump for President.” The claim quickly gained traction, with the post amassing thousands of likes and shares. Jordan’s representatives, however, swiftly issued a statement refuting the endorsement.
“There is absolutely no truth to the claim that Michael Jordan has made an endorsement in the presidential election,” his reps told The Independent.
Throughout his career, Jordan has been known for keeping his political views largely private. Reflecting on his position in the 2020 docuseries The Last Dance, Jordan stated, “I never thought of myself as an activist. I thought of myself as a basketball player.” This approach to public life traces back to 1990, when Jordan opted not to endorse Democrat Harvey Gantt in a North Carolina Senate race against Jesse Helms. Some encouraged him to back Gantt, but Jordan famously responded, “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”
Despite public pressure, Jordan has remained consistent in his decision to separate his personal political views from his public persona.
