In response to widespread public outcry, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of minors who were detained and are currently facing prosecution for allegedly participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests held across the country in August.
The directive was announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing in Abuja on November 4. He also stated that President Tinubu has called for an investigation into the conduct of the law enforcement officers involved in the minors' arrest, detention, and prosecution. Any officials found responsible for mistreatment will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
Minister Idris added that the President has instructed the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the welfare of the affected minors, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to their well-being.
The decision follows a surge of public criticism after videos circulated last week showing some of the detained minors appearing visibly malnourished and even collapsing during their court appearance in Abuja. The footage sparked significant concern nationwide, prompting calls for immediate action.
