Prison Instructor Admits to Inappropriate Relationship with Zara Aleena's Killer

Hayley Jones, a 33-year-old prison workshop instructor, has confessed to engaging in an "inappropriate relationship" with Jordan McSweeney, the man convicted of murdering UK lawyer Zara Aleena. Jones pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office at Woolwich Crown Court on October 31, stemming from her month-long affair with McSweeney while he was incarcerated at HMP Belmarsh between March and April of last year.

McSweeney, now 31, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 38 years for the brutal murder of Zara Aleena, a crime he committed shortly after being released from prison for a previous offense. His sentence was later reduced to 33 years on appeal. The court heard that he had followed several women in the streets of Ilford, East London, before fixating on Aleena as she walked home from a night out. He ultimately admitted to sexually assaulting and murdering her in the early hours of June 26, 2022.

During the court proceedings, Judge David Miller stated that Jones would be sentenced at a later date, emphasizing that an immediate prison term is likely. He noted that while she is currently on conditional bail and a pre-sentence report has been ordered, the nature of her offense warrants serious consideration for incarceration.

Meanwhile, McSweeney is set to appear in court again on November 19 for further proceedings, with a provisional trial date scheduled for April 13, 2026. Jones, who had been employed as a workshop instructor, was warned that her actions could lead to significant repercussions, including a potential prison sentence.
