James Hitchcock, a goalkeeper for Barton Town FC and a devoted father, has tragically passed away following a serious head injury sustained during an alleged assault. The incident occurred last Sunday at York’s railway station, and Hitchcock succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Thursday.
The 30-something athlete, originally from Cottingham, East Yorkshire, had been a popular yet reserved figure in Barton Town's first team. Club chairman Mark Gregory expressed the team’s devastation, saying Hitchcock was deeply respected by his teammates and the broader football community.
Police have charged 22-year-old McKenzie Dicicco from Stockton-on-Tees with murder and affray in connection with the incident. Dicicco appeared in York Magistrates' Court to confirm his identity but did not enter pleas to the charges.
Barton Town FC shared the heartbreaking news in a statement on social media, offering condolences to Hitchcock’s wife, April, and their young son, Freddie. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his wife April, their young son Freddie, his parents, family, and friends,” the club wrote. All matches scheduled for this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect.
Hitchcock joined Barton Town in May, transitioning from Bridlington Town under manager Anthony Bowsley. Bridlington Town also released a heartfelt tribute, stating, “The word 'devastated' does not explain how we as a club feel at this time. Hitch will always be on our minds and in our hearts.”
The football community has since rallied to honor Hitchcock's memory. Tributes have poured in from fans, players, and clubs across the region, with Bridlington Town planning a special remembrance at their Boxing Day match.
The tragic loss of James Hitchcock has left a void in both his family and the football world, where his presence will be dearly missed.
