Charly Boy Issues Warning Over Detention of Activist Dele Farotimi

Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has issued a stern warning regarding the continued detention of activist and author Dele Farotimi. In a statement shared on social media, Charly Boy threatened to release sensitive information about legal luminary Are Afe Babalola if Farotimi is not granted bail by Wednesday, December 20, 2024.

Farotimi was arraigned on December 4, 2024, on a 16-count charge related to allegations he made in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. The book accuses Afe Babalola of corrupting the judiciary and influencing judgments at the Supreme Court. Farotimi has pleaded not guilty to all charges but has been remanded in prison since his arraignment.

Expressing frustration at the prolonged detention, Charly Boy wrote:

WARNING:
If dem no release Dele on bail tomorrow, we are going to go ballistic with the information we have on Are Babalola.
We won’t be playing this time. Enough of this nonsense.”

The entertainer's comments have sparked widespread reactions, with many supporters of Farotimi calling for his immediate release.

Farotimi's book has been a subject of controversy since its publication, as it critiques Nigeria’s judiciary and highlights alleged systemic corruption. Legal experts and human rights advocates have weighed in on the case, with some arguing that Farotimi’s detention raises concerns about freedom of expression in Nigeria.

The situation has drawn attention from civil rights groups, who see Farotimi’s imprisonment as an attack on activism and free speech. Charly Boy’s warning adds to the mounting pressure on the authorities to reconsider Farotimi’s bail application.

As the December 20 deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether the activist will be granted bail or if the standoff will escalate further.
