Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been pictured for the first time in a mugshot following his arrest. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, was apprehended on December 9 at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a five-day nationwide manhunt.
Mangione is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Thompson from behind outside a Hilton hotel in New York City, just before Thompson was set to attend a shareholder conference. Thompson, the CEO of the largest medical insurance company in the U.S., was killed in broad daylight, sending shockwaves through both the corporate and healthcare sectors.
Following his arrest, Mangione was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to authorities. Manhattan prosecutors have since obtained an arrest warrant for murder, which will facilitate his extradition to New York.
Police were led to Mangione's location after a customer at the Altoona McDonald's recognized him. Upon arrest, Mangione provided officers with a fake ID and appeared nervous when questioned about his recent travels to New York. When asked to remove his mask, officers confirmed his identity.
Authorities reported that Mangione was found with a gun matching the weapon used in Thompson's killing, as well as the same fake ID used by the shooter to check into a New York hostel. Additionally, he had several fraudulent IDs and a three-page handwritten document expressing "ill will toward corporate America."
As Mangione remains in custody in Pennsylvania, court officials noted that he has not yet secured legal representation. His next steps in the legal process will depend on his extradition to New York.
