At 90 years old, Alhaji Adegoke Ogunyemi, an accomplished Nigerian pharmacist and co-founder of Jolliters Chemists in Ogun State, has shared his stance on inheritance and the legacy he plans to leave behind. In a recent interview with Punch newspaper, Ogunyemi revealed that while he has provided his children with quality education, he does not intend to leave them any wealth.
“I don’t plan to leave any wealth for them,” Ogunyemi stated. “What I will leave is a solid education, which is the foundation for a successful life.” He emphasized the importance of self-reliance, stressing that education is the most valuable inheritance a parent can give to their children.
He explained that a good education, especially at the university level, equips individuals with lifelong skills that ensure their independence. “Education is a tool for life,” Ogunyemi said. “If they work hard, it will sustain them even when I am no longer around.” He further noted that if his children chose to remain idle or fail to learn, they would have no one to blame but themselves.
Ogunyemi expressed gratitude that his children took his advice to heart. His sons and daughters have excelled in various fields, with his first son becoming a distinguished pharmacist and fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, while his other children have achieved success as engineers, accountants, and professionals in their respective fields.
Ogunyemi’s philosophy underscores the value he places on education as a means of securing a future, independent of material inheritance, and his belief that hard work and education are key to thriving in life.
