Nigerian Priest Highlights Economic Implications of Religious Dominance

Rev. Angelo Chidi Unegbu, a Nigerian Catholic priest, has expressed concerns over the prevalence of churches compared to industries in the country, suggesting that this imbalance hinders economic progress and contributes to societal challenges.

In a Facebook post shared on Tuesday, Rev. Unegbu argued that a nation with more churches than industries is unlikely to achieve prosperity.

“A country that has more religious billboards than industrial billboards or adverts cannot be said to be religious. It is rather a country that has excelled in religious merchandise. Such a country cannot but be poor, insecure, and ungodly,” he stated.

The priest’s remarks highlight the intersection of religion and development in Nigeria, where faith-based institutions have flourished amid economic stagnation. He appears to criticize the commercialization of religion, implying that an overemphasis on religious promotion might detract from efforts to boost industrialization and economic growth.

Rev. Unegbu’s comments reflect ongoing debates about the role of religion in shaping national priorities. While Nigeria is known for its deep religiosity, critics have often pointed out the disparity between its vibrant religious activities and its economic realities, including high unemployment and insecurity.

The priest’s statement serves as a call for introspection on how resources and efforts are allocated in the country, urging a shift toward fostering industries and economic opportunities rather than solely focusing on religious expansion.

While some praised Rev. Unegbu for addressing what they see as a critical issue, others defended the importance of religious institutions in providing moral guidance and social support. The conversation underscores the delicate balance between faith and economic development in shaping Nigeria’s future.
