Speed Darlington’s Lawyer Decries Prolonged Detention by Police

The counsel representing controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has raised concerns over his continued detention by the police, a week after his re-arrest in Owerri, Imo State.

The artist, known for his outspoken and flamboyant persona, was taken into custody after performing at a show. His re-arrest follows an earlier incident in October when he was detained in Abuja over allegations of cyberbullying fellow musician Burna Boy.

Speed Darlington’s initial arrest stemmed from a video he shared online, where he insinuated that Burna Boy had connections with American music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was recently embroiled in allegations of sex trafficking. The singer referenced claims about Diddy being found with over 1,000 bottles of baby oil, adding fuel to the controversy.

He was granted bail at the time but reportedly failed to honor the police’s request to return for further questioning, prompting his recent apprehension.

In a public statement shared a week after the re-arrest, the singer’s lawyer, Alieke, criticized the authorities for detaining his client beyond the legally permissible period. He urged the police to respect Speed Darlington’s rights and grant him bail.

“My client is entitled to bail, and this prolonged detention violates his fundamental rights,” Alieke asserted.

The situation has sparked mixed reactions among fans and legal observers. Some have called for the enforcement of due process, emphasizing that bail is a constitutional right, while others argue the need for Speed Darlington to address the allegations against him.

As the controversy unfolds, the legal team is reportedly exploring options to secure the singer’s release. The police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the delay in granting bail or the next steps in the investigation.

The case highlights ongoing discussions around the balance between individual rights and law enforcement in handling sensitive cases involving public figures.
