South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Declares Martial Law Amid Accusations of Opposition Anti-State Activities

In a surprising late-night television address on Tuesday, December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, accusing the main opposition Democratic Party of engaging in anti-state activities and sympathizing with North Korea.

President Yoon criticized the Democratic Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, for actions he described as “anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion.” He cited their recent motions to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal as evidence of their disruptive agenda.

“The National Assembly has become a den of criminals, paralyzing state affairs,” Yoon declared. He described martial law as a necessary measure to counteract these alleged threats and protect the nation's freedoms, stability, and democratic system.

Reports indicated that the parliament speaker was attempting to convene a session, but access to the building was blocked, leaving lawmakers unable to proceed. Local broadcaster YTN and Yonhap news agency reported heightened tensions as political activities came to a standstill.

Yoon accused the opposition of fostering a “drug haven” and creating chaos detrimental to public safety and national order. He alleged that their actions were undermining the liberal democratic system, saying, “The nation is in a precarious state, teetering on the edge of collapse.”

While acknowledging potential inconveniences caused by martial law, Yoon assured citizens that efforts would be made to minimize its impact. “We will eliminate the anti-state forces and restore the country to normalcy as quickly as possible,” he pledged, framing his decision as essential for the safety and sustainability of the nation.

The declaration of martial law has intensified political divisions in South Korea, with critics likely to question the president’s claims and the necessity of such drastic measures. As events unfold, the nation faces a period of uncertainty and potential upheaval.
