American transgender model and influencer Alex Consani has been named Model of the Year at the prestigious British Fashion Awards held in London. The 21-year-old triumphed over five other nominees, cementing her place as a trailblazer in the fashion industry.
Consani, known for her striking 6-foot frame, bleached hair, and bold eyebrows, was selected ahead of fellow nominees Alva Claire (UK), Amelia Gray (USA), Anok Yai (South Sudan), Liu Wen (China), and Mona Tougaard (Denmark). The nominees represented a diverse array of backgrounds, reflecting the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) commitment to recognizing talent from underrepresented groups, including LGBTQ individuals.
The BFC described the Model of the Year award as celebrating "the global impact of a model who, over the last 12 months, has dominated the industry." They praised Consani for her outstanding contributions, which include numerous editorial and advertising campaigns.
During her acceptance speech, presented by model Ashley Graham and actor Nava Mau, Consani acknowledged the historic significance of her win.
“I am the first trans model to win this award,” she said, eliciting applause from the audience. “Now more than ever, it’s an important conversation about how to support and uplift one another in this industry—especially those who have been made to feel insignificant. Change is not only possible, but it’s also necessary, and this is a step in the right direction.”
Consani began her modeling career in 2015 and has since become a recognizable face in the fashion world. Her influence goes beyond the runway, embodying the industry’s growing embrace of diversity and inclusivity.
The British Fashion Awards continue to highlight significant progress in representation, with Consani’s victory marking a milestone moment for both her career and the broader movement for equality in the fashion world.
