Tragedy in Guinea: Dozens Killed in Stadium Stampede Following Violent Clash at Football Match

Guinea is mourning a devastating tragedy after a football match erupted into violence, leading to a deadly stampede that reportedly claimed the lives of dozens, with some reports suggesting the death toll could reach 100.

The incident occurred during a tournament organized in honor of the country’s military junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, who assumed power after a coup in 2021 and now serves as president. The match, held on Sunday in Nzerekore, descended into chaos following a controversial decision by the referee.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unrest began when fans disputed a referee's call, leading to a pitch invasion. The situation quickly spiraled out of control as spectators clashed violently. Reports indicate that demonstrators set fire to a nearby police station amid the turmoil. Shocking, unverified videos from the scene appear to show bodies strewn across streets outside the stadium.

Local hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of victims. A doctor, speaking anonymously, described harrowing scenes at the hospital, stating, “There are bodies lined up as far as the eye can see, and the morgue is full. Others lie on the floor in the hallways.” Another medical professional confirmed there were “dozens of dead.”

Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah issued a statement expressing the government’s sorrow over the tragic events, saying, “The government deplores the incidents that marred the football match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams this afternoon in Nzerekore. During the stampede, victims were recorded.”

The opposition group National Alliance for Change and Democracy held authorities responsible, calling the events a “grave tragedy” and pointing to the use of tear gas by police as a factor that escalated the panic.

Local media outlet Guinee Panorama reported that the violence intensified rapidly, leading to chaotic scenes both inside and outside the stadium. The opposition has called for an independent investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy and hold those responsible accountable.

As Guinea grapples with this horrific event, questions are being raised about the organization of the tournament and the readiness of security forces to handle such large crowds. This tragedy casts a shadow over the nation’s sporting and political landscape, underscoring the urgent need for reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
