Tragic Road Accident in Southern Ethiopia Claims Over 60 Lives

A devastating road accident in southern Ethiopia has left more than 60 people dead, according to the Sidama Regional Health Bureau. The incident, which occurred at Gelana Bridge in Bona Zuria Woreda, has sent shockwaves through the region.

The health bureau confirmed on Sunday via social media that the death toll had reached 66, with four survivors currently receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital. Few details about the circumstances leading to the crash have been released.

Images shared by the health bureau depict a harrowing scene: crowds gathered around a vehicle partially submerged in water, with some attempting rescue efforts. Other photos show bodies covered with blue tarpaulin lying on the ground near the accident site.

The accident has prompted an outpouring of grief, with the health bureau expressing its condolences to the victims and their families. Local authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.

Sidama state, located approximately 300 kilometers south of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, is no stranger to road accidents, which are a common challenge in the region due to poor infrastructure, overloading, and driver fatigue. This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for road safety reforms to prevent such catastrophic incidents.

The Ethiopian government and local authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the crash and take measures to support the victims' families and improve road conditions in the area.
