UN Calls for Israel to Cease Strikes in Syria Amid Escalating Tensions

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, O. Pedersen, has urged Israel to halt its military actions in Syria as the country grapples with the aftermath of 50 years of Assad rule. Pedersen’s call comes amid a volatile shift in Syria's leadership, with rebel forces seizing control of Damascus on Sunday, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to relinquish power.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel’s military had been ordered to take control of the buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the rest of Syria. On Monday, Israel also announced strikes targeting Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities and the deployment of troops within the buffer zone. These actions have sparked widespread condemnation.

The United Nations has verified that Israeli troops have entered the Syrian buffer zone, violating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel, according to UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. Pedersen condemned Israel’s continued movements and bombardments within Syrian territory, emphasizing the urgent need for these operations to cease.

Israel’s actions have drawn strong criticism from several Middle Eastern nations. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar have all condemned Israel’s seizure of the buffer zone, accusing Israel of exploiting Syria’s internal instability to expand its territorial holdings. The Saudi Foreign Ministry decried Israel’s actions as a violation of international law and an effort to undermine Syria’s territorial integrity. Similarly, the Arab League and other regional governments have called Israel’s moves a dangerous escalation that undermines Syria’s sovereignty.

As tensions rise, the international community remains divided on how to address Israel's actions, which are seen as reshaping the region’s political landscape. The situation continues to develop, with global concerns over the potential for further conflict and instability in the region.
