On Sunday, December 8, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jalali was spotted being escorted by rebel forces through Damascus, reportedly en route to a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel where he is expected to hand over government authority to opposition groups. A video circulating online shows Al-Jalali surrounded by armed men as he descends a set of steps before entering a black SUV with another individual.
According to the video, the prime minister is accompanied by the 5th Corps of rebels from Hauran, and the group is heading to the hotel for talks regarding the transfer of the country's institutions to the Free Syrian Army. The clip also features a man stating, “The former prime minister is with the 5th Corps from the people of Hauran heading to the Four Seasons Hotel for a meeting and to hand over the country’s institutions to the heroes of the Free Army.”
Al-Jalali, in a previous statement, emphasized his desire to "ensure" the continued operation of public institutions, state facilities, and to uphold the "safety and security for all citizens" during this tumultuous time.
Meanwhile, rebel factions in Damascus declared the Syrian capital "liberated" on December 8 in a televised announcement aired on state television. Footage shared on social media captured rebel fighters celebrating by firing weapons into the air near the Syrian presidential palace, with some fighters seen at the palace’s southern gate. The images showed a starkly deserted entrance area, further indicating the growing influence of opposition forces in the region.
This development marks a significant moment in Syria's ongoing conflict, as the government appears to be losing control over key institutions in the capital. The situation remains fluid as power dynamics in Damascus continue to evolve.
