Alligator Alcatraz” Detention Center Operation Continues Despite Judge’s Construction Freeze Over Environmental Threats

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed that operations and deportations at the immigration detention center nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz" continue despite a federal judge’s order to temporarily stop new construction at the facility. The center, converted from a training airport in Ochopee and capable of housing up to 3,000 detainees in tents, has been criticized for alleged environmental harm and poor living conditions.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams allowed the center to keep operating but barred further construction activities like new buildings, lighting, or fencing, pending review of whether the project violates the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe argue the center threatens protected wetlands and undermines environmental restoration efforts. Meanwhile, Florida’s lawyers contend the state controls the facility and NEPA does not apply.

The judge recognized the center as a joint state-federal project, fueling ongoing legal battles as environmental advocates push to protect the fragile Everglades ecosystem from further damage.
