“Denmark Reports More Mysterious Drone Sightings Over Military Bases — NATO on Alert”

Denmark is grappling with a string of mysterious drone sightings that have sparked security concerns across the country and within NATO.

On Saturday, Danish officials confirmed that drones were spotted overnight above multiple military installations, including Karup Air Base — Denmark’s largest military base and home to its fleet of F-35 fighter jets. Guards at the base reported several observations just outside its perimeter, according to Reuters.

The new incidents come only days after drone activity forced the closure of Aalborg Airport, which also doubles as a Danish military hub. Earlier in the week, drones were also reported near Copenhagen Airport, leading to heightened speculation about possible foreign involvement.

While Danish authorities labeled the Aalborg incident a “hybrid attack” by a “professional actor,” they stressed that the drones were launched locally and did not originate from Russia. Still, some in Denmark have voiced suspicions that Moscow could be involved, especially given the timing of the disruptions.

Despite the mounting tension, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen ruled out invoking NATO’s Article 4, which allows allied countries to consult over security threats. He noted that while Poland and Estonia had recently triggered the mechanism after similar aerial disturbances, Denmark “had no reason to do so” at this stage.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the wave of incidents “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date,” vowing that no potential culprit would be ruled out.

Neighboring Norway has also reported possible drone sightings near one of its own air force bases, further raising regional concerns.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Friday that he had spoken with Frederiksen and confirmed the alliance was taking the incidents “very seriously.”

“NATO Allies and Denmark are working together on how we can ensure the safety and security of our critical infrastructure,” Rutte wrote on X.

For now, Denmark is weighing its next move — but with drones repeatedly appearing over military and civilian targets, the pressure to respond is growing.
