Donald and Melania Trump’s recent visit to Windsor Castle grabbed attention—not for their royal audience, but for the couple’s demands before even meeting King Charles III and Queen Camilla. According to palace insiders, the Trumps requested separate suites and insisted on using their own sheets on both beds. One insider summed it up bluntly: “Everything has to be done their way.”
The couple flew to the UK on Tuesday and were formally received by the King and Queen the following day. Rob Shuter’s report on Substack highlighted that the Trumps treated even the bedding as part of a production, with one courtier quipping, “It’s not just a bed — it’s a production.”
While their requests may seem extravagant, they weren’t entirely out of step with royal tradition. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip famously maintained separate bedrooms, and King Charles and Queen Camilla reportedly live under separate roofs. Charles himself is known to travel with his own sheets. Still, one insider joked, “It’s a whole new level of fuss.”
Another insider pointed out that there could be a security dimension to the requests: “When presidents travel, even bedding can be a security issue.” For the Windsor Castle staff, hosting the Trumps meant three days of meticulous attention to detail. Yet for Donald and Melania, it was about ensuring their stay met the same high standards they maintain in their private lives. In the end, what may have looked like over-the-top behavior mirrored the practices of the monarchy itself.
