Julia Roberts didn’t hold back at the 63rd New York Film Festival. The Hollywood icon, promoting her new film After the Hunt, took a subtle but sharp jab at President Donald Trump during a press conference — and the crowd loved it.
In the film, Roberts stars as a Yale philosophy professor grappling with sexual assault accusations against a colleague, a storyline that’s already sparking conversation. When asked about cancel culture in the U.S., she didn’t answer directly — instead, she quipped: “You should answer over at the UN right now,” referencing Trump’s recent United Nations address. Laughter and applause erupted across the room.
This isn’t the first time Roberts has taken a stand politically. She narrated an ad supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, urging women to vote their conscience — even if their husbands backed Trump. The ad showed a woman casting her vote for Harris, then confidently telling her husband, “Sure did, honey,” when he questioned her choice. Trump fired back on Fox & Friends, calling the ad “stupid” and claiming Roberts would later “cringe” at it.
Back to After the Hunt: the film premiered earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival and will hit theaters on October 10 through Amazon MGM. The movie divided audiences in Venice, and Roberts acknowledged that was intentional. “Everybody comes out with all these different feelings, emotions, and points of view,” she said. “You realize what you believe in strongly and what your convictions are because we stir it all up for you. So, you’re welcome.”
Roberts’ mix of political commentary and provocative storytelling shows that, decades into her career, she’s still unafraid to speak her mind — on screen and off. Whether it’s challenging a president or forcing audiences to wrestle with uncomfortable questions about power, justice, and morality, Julia Roberts is still commanding attention, one bold moment at a time.
