The Pentagon is expected to request President Donald Trump’s authorization to execute Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting that killed 13 and wounded 32. Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, admitted to the attack, claiming he acted to protect the "Islamic Empire" from U.S. forces.
Sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013, Hasan’s final appeal was denied in April 2025, clearing the way for execution—the first U.S. military execution in over six decades if approved. Department of War Secretary Pete Hegseth stated, “This savage terrorist deserves the harshest lawful punishment… victims and survivors deserve justice without delays.”
Hasan, born in Arlington, Virginia to Palestinian immigrant parents, served nearly 20 years in the Army and had become radicalized while stationed at Fort Hood.
