Op-Ed Calls for U.S. Policy Overhaul on Nigeria Amid Christian Persecution

Michael Rubin (@mrubin1971) has written an op-ed urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reconsider U.S. policy toward Nigeria in light of ongoing attacks on Christian communities.

Rubin draws historical parallels to the 1967–1970 Biafran War, in which over 2 million mostly Christian civilians died, largely from starvation, and links this legacy to current violence by Fulani militias and the alleged inaction of leaders such as former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Tinubu.

The piece recommends a comprehensive U.S. review of Nigeria’s unity versus potential Biafran independence as a strategic measure to counter Islamist extremism, piracy, and foreign influence. Rubin’s stance has resonated with Biafran diaspora groups, who advocate for international recognition of self-determination for Biafra.
